educators on the move

Roberto d'Erizans [Intermediate Faculty '04-'07] recently was appointed the Director of the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy (MMLA). A joint program run by Middlebury College and the Monterey Institute of International Studies, MMLA offers summer language programs for middle and high school students. As the director, Roberto designs, implements, and leads all aspects of the academy's two programs, which give students the opportunity to study French, Spanish, Arabic, or Mandarin Chinese in an immersive setting. Before coming to MMLA, Roberto taught Spanish, was the Corridor Head of a boy's dorm, and served as Chair of the Modern Languages Department at the Taft School in Connecticut.

"While I loved my job at Taft, I could not resist the job offer," Roberto wrote to us in an email. "It was a perfect combination of my summer work with Explo, my academic interests, and my work at Taft, and I liked the idea of pursuing additional administrative experience. I can honestly say that these hands-on administrative experiences with Explo gave me the strength and knowledge to pursue these leadership opportunities."

Michelle Garrigan [Intermediate Faculty '06-'07] has accepted a position as a Senior Admissions Representative for Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Previously a member of the school's graduate activities department, starting in August, Michelle will be based in the New York City area, serving as the school's off-site admissions rep in the Northeast US. A 2007 alum of SCAD with a master's degree in interior design, Michelle says she hopes to make it to the Senior Program's college fair this summer.

This upcoming fall, Russell Werkman [Intermediate Faculty '05-'06] will assume the position of Head of the Upper School at St. George's School in Spokane, WA. Currently, Russell is a teacher, coach, and dorm parent at Trinity Pawling School in New York and is working towards completing his graduate studies in Educational Leadership. In May, before he and his family move out west, Russell will receive his master's degree from the Teachers College at Columbia University.

About the move, Russell has this to say: "The move to St. George's is a big move for us as a family and me personally. I am excited about the challenge of leading an upper school. What drew me to Explo was the importance of learning through experience and adventure, and one of the aspects of Explo that is so powerful is the way students take ownership of their projects and classes. I aspire to create a school that approaches that same commitment of the students in a more traditional school setting."
