On April 20, Betsy Gott [Junior Faculty '05-'08] competed in her first Boston Marathon. Averaging 8:20 mile splits over the 26.2-mile course, Betsy completed the race in 3:38:32, good enough to qualify her for the 2010 marathon. Betsy has already said that she plans to run again next year; it will be her third marathon.

Betsy ran in the event as part of a team representing the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Over the course of the fall, winter, and spring, she raised more than $6250 for cancer research, which she collected in honor of her aunt and a young cancer patient named Theo, whom she met through Dana-Farber. In the months leading up to the race, Betsy kept a blog that chronicled the donations she received as well as her extensive training. All in all, more than 105 people donated to Betsy through Dana-Farber and Betsy ran more than 725 miles in her training!

Way to go, Betsy!

With nearly 4000 jumps and over 20 years experience between them, Ben Liston [Junior Faculty '02-'05] and Steve Feldman [Junior Faculty '02, '04] are part of the skydiving team MassDefiance. Their unit, which competes, coaches, and trains across the country, won the gold in the 2005 USPA Nationals (4-way advanced division) and finished fifth in 2007 (4-way open division).

Outside of skydiving, Steve and Ben are both involved in education. Having recently completed a counseling degree at Harvard Graduate School of Education, Ben lives with his wife in Antigua, Guatemala, where he volunteers at local schools. Steve, meanwhile, will begin his graduate studies this fall at the Klingenstein Institute at Columbia University in New York City, after spending the last five years at Milton Academy as a classroom teacher, coach, and dorm parent.

Tracey Jacobi [Junior Faculty '01-'05] is the Events Coordinator at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD), where she is planning the hospital's fourth annual half marathon. The proceeds of the CHaD Half Marathon & Relay, which will be run August 30, go entirely to funding the programs of the hospital – New Hampshire's only children's hospital. Tracey, who has run three marathons herself, says that this year, in addition to trying to raise as much money as possible, the CHaD Half Marathon is aiming to break the world record for the most people dressed as superheroes at one time.

S+H Update (9/25/09): Tracey reports that the CHaD Half Marathon & Relay was a rousing success. In addition to raising over $250,000, the event broke the Guinness World Record for "Most Superheroes in One Place." To Tracey and her band of superheroes, we say congratulations!
